Mountaineering and Climbing Club
The best view comes after the hardest climb
UPMCC welcomes beginners and experienced climbers. Each week a trip is made to a local climbing centre where members can take part in bouldering. Leaving the union at 6pm and getting back at roughly 9pm. We also run monthly trips to a roped climbing centre.
Outdoor climbing takes place all over the country and abroad. In October the Fresher's Trip in Portland takes many people climbing outdoors for the first time. Other weekend trips go to the Gower, Portland and Swanage, with other options being explored.
Trips consist of outdoor climbing, outdoor bouldering, hiking and mountaineering. Recent larger trips have included the French Alps, Costa Blanca in Spain, Snowdonia, and Llanberis.
Hiking and Mountaineering trips include a traditional trip to Snowdon in the spring, and other walks in the South Downs, Dartmoor, and more. This is a great opportunity for new hikers to learn all about orienteering, equipment maintainance, and proper hiking technique and safety alongside experienced and capable hikers. Confident hikers and mountaineers are welcome, and we will support you in achieving any goals you bring with you to the society.
Weekly socials are organised which take place all over Portsmouth, with major socials such as Fresher's White T-shirt and the Christmas Meal.
Regular socials include slacklining, yoga, orienteering challenges, and other activities that compliment climbing and mountaineering abilities. We also explore the vast culture of pubs, bars, and restaurants that make up so much of Portsmouth's character.
The club competes in several competitions, both formal and fun, including British Universities and Colleges (BUCS), South Coast University Bouldering (SCUB), South West University Bouldering Series (SWUBS), and the red spider monthly bouldering comp. We run our own yearly Varsity competition with Southampton University and attend a Varsity competition.
This year, our Safety and Training secretary will be providing training routines for both new and experienced climbers to help push grades and improve our competition performance.
