Welcome to the University of Portsmouth Music Society!

Members of this society have a passion for watching, making and performing music. We are a community of people with common interests and a perfect place to make friends while studying at university. This group can take you on an international stage with our bi-annual tours to Europe which have recently included Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Slovenia. Outside of music making we run socials for our members, giving everyone a chance to take a break. Our ensembles include:

The University of Portsmouth Big Band is an auditioned ensemble of dedicated musicians and vocalists playing jazz and swing to a professional standard. They have performed a range of gigs from Grad Ball to Charity Galas. Having recently toured the Spain they were featured on local news.

The University of Portsmouth Concert Band is a dynamic wind ensemble offering performance opportunities for all who are interested. Repertoire varies from popular music to traditional works. It is open to Brass, Woodwind and Percussion musicians of any experience level.

The Dramatic and Musical Society (DMS) performs musicals or light opera in the New Theatre Royal each year. In the upcoming academic year DMS will be working on Orpheus in the Underworld; which they will perform in late February. The group is looking for talented and dynamic people to come and join. No experience is necessary and all abilities are welcome!

The University of Portsmouth Choir offers the opportunity for anyone in the music society get involved and sing. Open to students, lecturers and the wider university community, as well as many Alumni. Singers with a varying level of musical experience are welcome, joining the choir also offers the opportunity to learn to read music. There are many concerts a year, including collaborations with local orchestras and other choirs.

The University of Portsmouth Orchestra is an auditioned ensemble dedicated to performing classical repertoire, open to all orchestral musicians. A Grade 6 standard is strongly recommended for entry, with auditions for woodwind, brass and percussion. Previous performances include: Beethoven's Symphony No.9, Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite and Bizet's Carmen Suite. The spring term is dedicated to collaborating with DMS for the musical production, performed in the New Theatre Royal.

The Musicians Network is a place for anyone with a musical interest, regardless of genre, instrument or ability. This group allows members to meet up and form musical groups. We can help with securing and booking suitable rehearsal spaces, we are also in contact with local studios. We also host gigs for those wishing to perform.

Membership costs £5 which is used to run events throughout the year and secure venues.
